Alex McLeish has been told the Scotland job ‘is not worth it’ and should QUIT if his health is being affected by the current turmoil in the team.
Scotland legend and talkSPORT host Ally McCoist was reacting to reports McLeish is set to be axed, amid growing concerns he is struggling to cope with the stress and pressure of attempting to lead Scotland to a first major tournament in 22 years.
According to the Daily Record, the 60-year-old suffered a ‘deeply troubling episode’ before Sunday’s narrow victory over San Marino, which prompted SFA bosses to consider his position in the role.
Scotland suffered a disastrous start to their Euro 2020 qualifying campaign with a 3-0 defeat to Kazakhstan, which McCoist branded one of the nation’s worst results in their football history.
They followed that up with a 2-0 victory over San Marino, but fans still booed McLeish at the final whistle after an unconvincing performance against the worst team in international football.
And McCoist has spoken of his fears for his friend and former team-mate, insisting it is right he steps down if the job is putting his health at risk.
Speaking on Thursday’s Sports Breakfast, the ex-Rangers striker said:
“We all know the manager takes the responsibility. He picks the side, so big Alec will get it in the neck for that and rightly so. It comes with the territory.
“But where I’m at with the big fella is, I’m reading the report in the Daily Record which hinted at a few health issues.
“So I don’t care, I’m by the Kazakhstan thing and I’m by the San Marino thing, I know this fella, I played with him and he was first pick for the national team. He was everything to Scotland, that’s what he wanted to do.
“But if this a little bit more serious than a shocking result and it’s affecting his health, then it’s absolutely 100 per cent not worth it.
“There is nothing more important than your health. He’s got his family to think about.
“I don’t even know [if it’s true], I’m just reading that report and it’s concerned me a little bit. If it’s affecting his health, than get back out and enjoy your family, big fella.â€

Asked if he would consider a potential return to management to replace McLeish, if his friend did leave his post, McCoist added: “I can’t see that happening to be honest with you.
“There would be a lot more obvious choices – Steve Clarke and boys like that, I know they went for Michael O’Neill and he let them down.
“It would be anyone’s dream to manage their country, but there are a lot more candidates in front of me in the queue.”
