Danny Higginbotham reveals how Sir Alex Ferguson saved his Manchester United career when a referee accused him of assault

Danny Higginbotham reveals how Sir Alex Ferguson saved his Manchester United career when a referee accused him of assault

Danny Higginbotham has recalled how a referee nearly ended his career by falsely accusing him of assault.

Sir Alex Ferguson was forced to intervene when former Manchester United stars Higginbotham and Ronnie Wallwork, both on loan at Antwerp in Belgium, were handed lengthy bans for their alleged role in a tunnel bust-up.

Higginbotham was accused of beating up a referee

Higginbotham was accused of beating up a referee

The referee, Amand Ancion, said Wallwork pinned him up against a wall in the tunnel, while Higginbotham was also said to have laid his hands on him.

And the defender-turned-pundit has sensationally revealed the FIFA-listed official got someone to put marks on his neck and took photos of them.

Wallwork, 21 at the time, was facing a lifetime exclusion from the game, while a 20-year-old Higginbotham was looking at three years in Belgium and 12 months in England.

While the nightmare unfolded, United boss Sir Alex flew to Belgium to throw his support behind the two youngsters and offered them both new four-year contracts.

As the truth became clear, the bans were eventually quashed.

Yennaris made his way through the ranks and made his debut for the north London side against Manchester United in 2012.

However, he failed to make himself a mainstay in Arsene Wenger’s line-up and eventually left for Brentford.

In January, Chinese Super League side Beijing Guoan sealed a £5million deal for the playmaker and he has since learnt the language and even memorised the national anthem.

He is aiming to help China qualify for the World Cup in Qatar in 2022 and is eligible for a call-up after being granted citizenship, despite featuring for English youth sides in the past.

Chelsea to appeal two-window transfer ban to Court of Arbitration for Sport after FIFA uphold sanction

Chelsea to appeal two-window transfer ban to Court of Arbitration for Sport after FIFA uphold sanction

Chelsea have  announced they will appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport after the club’s two-window transfer ban for signing underage players was broadly rejected by FIFA.

The Premier League club were given the sanction, which runs until July 2020, in February and were also fined £460,000 for 29 breaches of the rules on the international transfer of minors.

Chelsea’s two-window transfer ban has been upheld by FIFA

Denying any wrongdoing, Chelsea immediately lodged an appeal, with the case heard by FIFA’s appeal committee last month and the outcome announced on Wednesday.

In a statement, the world governing body said it had “partially upheld” the appeal but only in the sense that Chelsea will now be allowed to sign players aged under 16, providing they come from within the European Economic Area.

The ban on signing over-16s remains in place, as does the fine, although it does not apply to the futsal or women’s teams.

“With respect to all men’s teams, the ban on registering new players, both nationally and internationally for two registration periods, has been confirmed by the FIFA Appeal Committee,” it said.

Cross-border transfers of players aged under 18 are banned unless there are specific, non-football reasons for the player moving to the relevant country.

In response, Chelsea again protested their innocence and revealed they will be appealing again, this time to CAS.

A club statement read: “The club notes that the FIFA Appeal Committee has decided to partially uphold the appeal lodged by Chelsea FC against the decision of the FIFA Disciplinary Committee.

“However, the club is very disappointed that the transfer ban of two consecutive registration periods was not overturned.

“Chelsea FC categorically refutes the findings of the FIFA Appeal Committee. It acted in accordance with the relevant regulations and will appeal the decision to the Court of Arbitration for Sport.”

LaLiga clubs Atletico Madrid, Barcelona and Real Madrid have all been sanctioned for similar offences in the past.

The Blues have now announced in a statement they would now take their appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

The club said they were ‘very disappointed’ the ban had not been overturned and “categorically” refuted the findings of FIFA’s appeal committee.

Chelsea have confirmed that they will take their appeal against a two-year transfer ban to the Court of Arbitration for Sport after FIFA rejected their opposition. Chelsea's Rejected Appeal Will be Heard by the CAS. Chelsea said they were "disappointed" in FIFA's rejection of their appeal in a scathing club statement.

The former Chelsea man gave us his verdict on his ultimate Champions League final XI ahead of the Madrid showdown – but he was torn over who to pick up front.

“I’ll only say Kane because for one reason, purely because he’s done it in even more seasons than Salah,” said Cascarino on Friday’s Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast.

“For club and country this season Harry Kane has got 27 goals and he’s been injured twice badly. His goal ratio has been absolutely sensational.

“Not that Salah hasn’t, I just think Salah had had a quieter season compared to last year.

“But, really, there’s nothing between them – it’s a coin flip.

“Today I say Kane, but tomorrow it could say Salah. It’s a draw.”

Arsene Wenger: Lyon make contact with former Arsenal manager as they plan Bruno Genesio replacement

Lyon have allegedly made contact with former Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger as they plan to change bosses this summer.

L’Equipe report the French side might move for his signature as a replacement for current head coach Bruno Genesio.

The Ligue 1 outfit have a young and talented squad boasting a number of players who seem likely to be involved in summer transfer speculation, like Tanguy Ndombele and Ferland Mendy.

However, Genesio currently only has them sitting third in the table, while they were beaten in the French Cup semi-final by eventual winners Rennes.

Better had been expected of the team and recent defeats to Dijon and Nantes have led the club to consider a change of management.

Lyon’s French head coach Bruno Genesio

Wenger is now apparently a dream appointment for Lyon and having been out of a managerial role since leaving the Emirates last summer the club will feel confident they can tempt him back into a job.

The French boss was in charge of the Gunners for 22 years before his exit and he has since revealed the break was needed as it has begun to take its toll on his health.

He admitted: â€Å“In life there are some splits that you choose and some that are imposed on you.

“In this case it was a bit of a mix of the two. Because, at a certain point, the fans need a change. In my last year it was becoming difficult.

“So it was both a break-up but also a relief for me, because carrying that responsibility for so long, with all the obligations that come with it, it wears you out.

“It’s extraordinarily difficult. And last year I felt I was beginning to pay the price health-wise.”
