Manchester United legend Roy Keane lays into Paul Pogba as Real Madrid transfer speculation intensifies

Roy Keane has attacked Paul Pogba and questioned his commitment to Manchester United.

The World Cup winner has endured a tumultuous season, with Jose Mourinho seemingly trying to force him out of Old Trafford.

When Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was appointed, the France international enjoyed a startling upturn in form and seemed to be justifying his £89million price tag.

But rumours of a rift between the Norwegian and his talisman began to surface and Pogba himself admitted it would be a ‘dream’ to play for Los Blancos.

And Keane, who was no stranger to controversy during his time in United̢۪s midfield, does not believe the 26-year-old can be trusted.

â€Å“I wouldn’t believe a word he says,” Keane said. â€Å“There’s no meaning, no meaning behind it.

â€Å“I don’t even think he believed what he was saying there.

“He is a big problem, no doubt about it.”

â€Å“You’ve got to run back when you’re defending!

â€Å“He said it got a bit heated after the game against Everton; I heard they were actually throwing their hair gel at each other.”

The former Republic of Ireland star did not limit the scathing assessments to just one Manchester United player, instead attacking the whole squad.

He insisted the current crop of players would throw Ole Gunnar Solskjaer under the bus in the same way they did to predecessor Mourinho in a passionate rant before the game.

Keane was speaking ahead of United’s derby clash with Manchester City, which ended in a 2-0 defeat for the Red Devils at Old Trafford.

Second-half goals from Bernardo Silva and Leroy Sane took City back to the top of the league, one point clear of Liverpool with three games left to play, and highlighted the gulf in class between United and the Premier League leaders.

“I reckon the City players couldn’t believe how easy it was tonight, in a derby game,” was Keane’s post-match assessment.

“City were very good but it was an easy night for them. They are sitting in the dressing room and can’t believe how comfortable it was.

“I don’t know what happened at half time. They never got going and City seemed sharper in the second half.

“Even the first goal, players not closing players down. We spoke about the basics but I reckon the City players couldn’t believe how easy it was in a derby game.

“You have to put demands on players and I think it was an easy night.”

Jonathan Walters: Burnley and Republic of Ireland forward announces retirement from football

Burnley striker and Republic of Ireland international Jonathan Walters has announced his retirement from football following a long-standing Achilles injury.

Walters, 35, sustained the injury while playing for Ipswich on loan during a Championship match against Bolton last September.

Walters cited a long-standing Achilles injury as the reason behind his retirement

It was thought the problem would keep him sidelined for six months but the veteran has revealed the issue has forced him into prematurely ending his career.

He wrote on Twitter: “Isn’t it ironic…my Achilles heel has literally been my Achilles heel and finished me off! I am now retired from playing football It’s been epic Veni vidi vici”.

Qualified to play for the Republic through his Irish mother, Merseyside-born Walters scored 14 goals in 54 international appearances and played at Euro 2012 and Euro 2016.

He started his professional career at Blackburn in 2000 after coming through the academy but failed to make a first-team appearance for Rovers before switching to Bolton the following year.

Walters then moved on to Hull, Wrexham and Chester before eventually establishing himself at Ipswich, where he scored 32 goals in 146 games in all competitions.

He was sold in the summer of 2010 for around £2.75million to Stoke, where he spent the next seven seasons.

Walters scored twice in a 5-0 thrashing of Bolton in an FA Cup semi-final at Wembley to help the Potters reach the 2011 final, where they lost 1-0 to Manchester City.

He netted 62 times in 271 matches for Stoke before joining Burnley for £3million in July 2017.

However, he was unable to force his way into Sean Dyche’s plans and was duly loaned out to Ipswich at the start of this season.

Walters was named in the starting XI for his first two matches with Town but a 71st-minute introduction against his former club Bolton would prove to be his final appearance as a professional.

A number of Walters’ former team-mates as well as the German FA paid tribute to him. Below you can see some of the best tweets.

Porto 1-4 (agg 1-6) Liverpool: Reds to face Barcelona in Champions League semi-finals following easy win in Portugal

Liverpool have a mouth-watering Champions League semi-final against Spanish giants Barcelona after securing a comfortable 4-1 win at Porto, going through 6-1 on aggregate.

The hosts started the game on the front foot but Liverpool took the lead against the run of play when Sadio Mane slid in Mohamed Salah’s cheeky ball following a lengthy VAR check.

Salah doubled the visitors’ lead with a calm finish on the counter-attack before Eder Militao pulled a goal back for Porto.

However, substitute Roberto Firmino restored Liverpool’s two-goal lead on the night and then Virgil van Dijk’s header added some gloss on the scoreline.

It was not quite a repeat of the 5-0 rout Liverpool enjoyed here 14 months ago but by the final whistle the effect was just the same as Jurgen Klopp’s side advanced with the minimum of fuss.

It might have been different had Porto boasted a cutting edge to go with their attacking intent as they bossed the early stages but failed to make it pay.

Jesus Corona made clear their intentions inside the opening minute when he cut inside from the right and bent a shot narrowly over Alisson Becker’s goal.

Porto were playing with energy and invention but Liverpool were aiding their cause, too often sloppy in possession and gifting the ball back to their hosts.

Alex Telles’ whipped corner found Danilo at the back post but he could only flick it wide before Pepe’s powerful shot fizzed past the target.

Yacine Brahimi was the next to try, but his shot from a tight angle was deflected away from danger.

It took until the 28th minute for Liverpool to construct their first attack, but it led to a goal which effectively ended the tie – albeit after a lengthy VAR check to overturn the initial decision of offside.

Mane was flagged offside but the goal was given following a VAR check

Mane, the hat-trick hero on this ground last February, applied the finishing touch as he slid in at the far post but Salah deserved the credit, brilliantly holding the ball up as defenders swarmed before poking the ball through to his team-mate.

Brahimi almost replied immediately but his strong shot was straight at Alisson and though Porto continued to enjoy the bulk of possession, their attacks no longer carried the conviction of those opening forays.

Liverpool went close to doubling their lead just before the break when Trent Alexander-Arnold skipped between two defenders and crossed for James Milner, with the ball picking up a deflection which sent it spinning wide of the far post.

Both teams made a change at the break with Liverpool sending on Firmino for Divock Origi, while Porto had one last throw of the dice by sending on Francisco Soares for Otavio and switching to 4-4-2 as he lined up alongside Moussa Marega.

There were quick chances for Marega and Soares before Hector Herrera shot straight at Alisson from range, but Liverpool were also posing more of a threat going forward as Salah headed Mane’s ball from deep wide of the target.

But the Egyptian, freshly named in Time magazine’s 100 list, was soon on the scoresheet. Trent Alexander-Arnold’s ball had him clean through on goal and there was never much doubt he would slip it under Iker Casillas.

That was Alexander-Arnold’s last involvement as Joe Gomez came on to make his first appearance since December.

Porto got a consolation when Eder Militao got up above Firmino to head in Telles’ cross but Liverpool were not done yet.

Mane fluffed his lines when he rounded Casillas only to strike over the open goal as he tumbled off balance, but it would not matter.

Firmino got a glancing header to Jordan Henderson’s cross in the 77th minute and Van Dijk nodded in a fourth six minutes from time.

Football: Sterling hits hat-trick as England thrash Czech Republic

LONDON (AFP) - Raheem Sterling scored a hat-trick as England started what they hope is a road back to Wembley for the Euro 2020 final with a comprehensive 5-0 win over the Czech Republic to open their qualifying campaign.
Harry Kane was also on target from the penalty spot as England carried the momentum from a run to the World Cup semi-finals and qualification for the last four of the Nations League into the Euro qualifiers.
England have stormed to the top of qualifying Group A ahead of Monday's trip to Montenegro, who drew 1-1 at Bulgaria.
Jadon Sancho is one of the new additions to Gareth Southgate's squad since that revival for the Three Lions in Russia and was handed his first competitive international start.
The 18-year-old, who has shone in the Bundesliga for Borussia Dortmund this season, gave England fans further cause for excitement, with his potential added to that of Sterling and Kane coming into their prime.
Sterling had scored just two goals in his first 45 caps, but the Manchester City winger now has five in his last three England games as he begins to come of age on the international stage.

Comfortable England

After a lacklustre start in which the hosts dominated possession without threatening much, one move of genuine quality opened the scoring on 23 minutes and the way to a comfortable night for Southgate's men.

Kane showed his ability is not restricted to finding the net with a wonderful pass inside Filip Novak to free Sancho, who squared for Sterling to tap home on the stretch.
Another burst of inspiration from Sterling made the game safe in first-half stoppage time.
He wriggled around four Czech defenders before a combination of Pavel Kaderabek and Tomas Kalas hauled him down.
Kane maintained his flawless record from the spot for England and scored his 21st international goal, firing his powerful penalty past Jiri Pavlenka despite the Czech stopper getting a hand to it.
The Czechs already had bad memories of Wembley as the scene where they lost the Euro 96 final to Germany in extra-time before this mauling.
Gone are the days where they are contenders to win the Euros, but Jaroslav Silhavy's side did at least spark briefly into life after the break.
Tomas Soucek headed inches wide and David Pavelka forced Jordan Pickford into two routine saves before England went through the gears to give the scoreline a fairer reflection of the gulf between the sides.
Sancho should have scored his first international goal after more good work from Sterling and Kane, but could not force the ball past a desperate challenge from Novak, and Sterling showed Sancho how it is done with a fine curling finish into the top corner just after the hour mark.
However, England's hat-trick hero had luck on his side for his third goal as a huge deflection left Pavlenka in the Czech goal flummoxed.
That was Sterling's final act as he made way for another precociously talented 18-year-old, Callum Hudson-Odoi, to make his international debut, while Declan Rice was also handed his England debut after switching allegiances from the Republic of Ireland.
And Hudson-Odoi had a big part to play in England's fifth as his shot was parried by Pavlenka into the onrushing Kalas, who haplessly turned the ball into his own net.

Premier League: Worst XI of the season, including Manchester United, Tottenham, and Arsenal players

Premier League: Worst XI of the season, including Manchester United, Tottenham, and Arsenal players

Now that the PFA Team of the Year has been announced it is only right that we give a mention to those players who haven’t shined this season.

Manchester United have had a turbulent campaign, having managed just two clean sheets at Old Trafford – their worst tally since the 1962/63 season.

Kieran Trippier has failed to replicate his World Cup form

6

Kieran Trippier has failed to replicate his World Cup form

While Huddersfield and Fulham have also had miserable seasons – with both clubs relegated with more than a month of the season remaining.

But who makes the cut in the ‘Worst XI’ of the season? talkSPORT.com has given its verdict…

Formation: 4-3-3

Goalkeeper: Asmir Begovic

The Bournemouth stopper has had a season to forget between the sticks. He has made the most errors leading to goals in the whole division (5).

His form has been so poor that Eddie Howe called on the 39-year-old veteran Artur Boruc to see out the rest of the season in goal for the Cherries.

David de Gea has also hit a poor run of form making four errors leading to goals this term, with three of them coming in his last three games but also contributed a couple of immaculate displays, including one against Tottenham.

Begovic has the most errors leading to goals this season

6

Begovic has the most errors leading to goals this season

Defenders: Kieran Trippier, Shkodran Mustafi, Terence Kongolo, Gaitan Bong

Tottenham right-back Kieran Trippier may have been involved in one of the most iconic moments of 2018 at the World Cup but he̢۪s been hugely disappointing this campaign.

The 28-year-old may find Harry Kane in the penalty area regularly but defensively he̢۪s put in some calamitous performances this season, and therefore he takes the right-back slot in the line-up.

Arsenal centre-back Shkodran Mustafi has yet again been hugely disapointing this term. The German has struggled since his £35m move from Valencia and the Gunners’ leaky defence is still their biggest weakness.

Mustafi has continued to struggle for the Gunners this term

6

Mustafi has continued to struggle for the Gunners this term

Huddersfield defender Kongolo has not stuck out in terms of individual errors but he gets the nod simply because the Terriers’ defence has been all over the place this season. They have shipped 74 goals and two of the five clean sheets they have recorded Kongolo was on the bench.

Gaetan Bong has also had a season to forget for the Seagulls. He gives the ball away far too much and offers very little going forward. Furthermore, his assist tally of 0 is very surprising given the nature of the modern full-back.

Midfielders: Nemanja Matic, Mateo Kovacic, Fred

Nemanja Matic of two years ago was undeniably one of the best holding midfielders in the Premier League but he has clearly lost his legs and should probably be offloaded by the Red Devils.

The Serb is too slow and does not cover enough ground defensively and has generally been poor this season.

Kovacic has struggled to make an impact for Chelsea

6

Kovacic has struggled to make an impact for Chelsea

Joining him in the line-up is United’s £50million summer signing Fred. The Brazilian has been poor on several occasions, most recently against Barcelona where he gave the ball away countless times.

He has played second-fiddle to Scott McTominay for large parts of the season too, going to show just how disappointing he has been for the Red Devils.

There was so much optimism around Stamford Bridge with the news that Mateo Kovacic would be joining, but ultimately his spell in west London has proved to be a disaster.

No-one actually knows what he does. He couldn’t score a goal if your life depended on it and doesn’t offer much in terms of passing either. Chelsea will be delighted it is only a loan move.

Forwards: Alexis Sanchez, Junior Hoilett, Laurent Depoitre

Alexia Sanchez’s nightmare move to Man United is getting worse and worse with each passing game. The Chilean has managed just one goal and one assist in 19 matches this campaign, despite being the club’s best paid player on £500k-a-week.

Sanchez’s nightmare time at United is showing no signs of ending

6

Sanchez’s nightmare time at United is showing no signs of ending

Cardiff winger Junior Hoilett has managed just a single assist this campaign despite featuring as a wide forward this season. However, he did score two absolute wonderstrikes against Wolves and Watford respectively which have been two great moments in an otherwise dire season for the former QPR man.

Huddersfield’s big Belgian Laurent Depoitre has failed to score a single goal in 23 league matches this season. But you have to feel sympathy for him with the service he has been given from the rest of the team.

Have a look at the line-up in full below

League Two round-up: MK Dons promoted, Sol Campbell’s Macclesfield Town survive, Notts County relegated

Notts County have been relegated from the Football League for the first time in the club’s history.

The Magpies’ relegation was confirmed by their 3-1 defeat at Swindon.

Neal Ardley’s team had to win at the County Ground to stand any chance of avoiding the drop as they went into the final day of the season in 23rd place in League Two, two points behind Macclesfield and with an inferior goal difference of eight.

Notts County dropped out of the Football League
