It’s May, meaning we’re on the final stretch of the season.
Titles, relegation and cup finals are still to be decided, but will the finale be as thrilling as 20 years ago? Then, across the board, there was last minute drama from Brunton Park to the Camp Nou…
Jimmy Glass and the great escape – 8 May, 1999
Carlisle retained their Football League status in dramatic circumstances at Brunton Park – and they owed it all to goalkeeper Jimmy Glass.
Except it wasn’t for keeping the ball out of the net, it was for putting it in.
Scarborough’s 1-1 draw with Peterborough meant Carlisle, who were drawing with Plymouth at the time, needed a goal to survive.
And in the final moment of the fifth minute of stoppage time Glass, on loan from Swindon, ran the length of the pitch to join his team-mates for a corner where he prodded in the winner.
Despair turned to elation for thousands of Carlisle supporters, who invaded the pitch to try and touch their saviour.
“I was always a frustrated forward. I looked over to Nigel Pearson and he waved me on. That was it, it all came down to that last kick. If I could bottle that feeling I would be a very rich man now,†Glass told the BBC. He might not be too welcome in Scarborough, mind.

And Solskjaer’s won it! – 26 May, 1999
Manchester United could hardly have had a worse start as Bayern Munich took a 1-0 lead in the fifth minute of the game. In fact, with the score remaining like that until the 90th minute, Bayern president Franz Beckenbauer decided to leave his seat in the stands and head down to the pitch, using the Camp Nou lift to make the one minute journey.
When he stepped out, United had won the game.
Teddy Sheringham and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer – both substitutes – ensured their place in United folklore with their goals one minute and three minutes into stoppage time.
“If you look at the clips, you’ll see that everyone ran over to Teddy celebrating except me,†Solskjaer said.
“I ran straight back to the halfway line because I was concentrating on playing half an hour [of extra-time] in a Champions League final. This was something I was going to savour. But I ruined that. I had this run and I scored.†The current Man United boss also revealed he damaged knee ligaments when celebrating his famous goal, ruling him out for several weeks.
Victory weapped up the treble for United, having won the FA Cup and Premier League already – the latter being won in nail-biting circumstances on the final day of the season at Old Trafford against Tottenham.
Anything United can do, City can do better – 30 May, 1999
If it hadn’t been for Paul Dickov, there would be no Sergio Aguero at the Etihad. No Nicky Weaver, no Ederson. Yes, City, who won the Abu Dhabi lottery in 2008 have become a powerhouse in modern football – 20 years after battling their way out of Division Two (League One) in a play-off final classic.
In the final minute of normal time, Gillingham had the champagne on ice and it looks like City faced another season in the third tier. It was 2-0 and even when Kevin Horlock made it 2-1 in the 89th minute, the most optimistic City fan wouldn’t have believed what was to come.
Dickov, though, in the fifth minute of stoppage time levelled things and City went on to win on penalties to secure their place in the First Division (Championship) and then reached the Premier League the following season – five years after their relegation from the top tier of English football.
