Sean Cox, the Liverpool supporter who suffered catastrophic head injuries in an attack by Roma fans last April, will leave hospital for the first time to attend a charity match organised to raise funds for his treatment.
Mr Cox was assaulted before Liverpool’s Champions League semi-final match at Anfield 12 months ago.
The Dunboyne man suffered a bleed on his brain after impact injuries to his head, and he required emergency surgery.
Mr Cox spent months receiving specialist neurological care at Dublin̢۪s Beaumont Hospital, before being transferred to a rehabilitation centre.
He is now set to leave hospital for the first time in almost a year to attend Dublin’s Aviva Stadium on Friday, April 14.

A Liverpool Legends XI take on an Irish Legends XI in a charity match in aid of the Sean Cox Rehabilitation Trust, and Mr Cox is in line to be at the match.
Stephen Felle, a close fried of Mr Cox, told Newstalk Breakfast: “We’re delighted to say that Sean is going to be there in person.
“It’s going to be Sean Cox’s first move outside a medical environment in almost 12 months, so it’s very special for the family, and it’s very emotional for [his wife] Martina.
“She said he does [know he’s going]… she said he does, and he’s excited… he keeps smiling, and he can’t wait.”
There is a chance Mr Cox may have to miss the match, however, should his condition worsen between now and Friday.
“It has taken a lot of planning,” Mr Felle added. “He is obviously medically dependent, and in terms of the logistics of getting him to there and making sure he’s properly cared for when in the stadium have taken some work.
“The caveat is if Sean got an infection or a cold or something happens between now and Friday, we might have to change the plan.
“But as we sit here now… that’s the plan.”
The likes of Niall Quinn, John Aldridge and Robbie Fowler are set to feature in the fundraiser, with Reds legend Kenny Dalglish managing a Liverpool XI captained by Ian Rush.
A Roma supporter, Simone Mastrelli, was jailed for three-and-a-half years in February after pleading guilty to the assault of Mr Cox.
