Shamal George: Liverpool goalkeeper shares pictures of man wanted in connection with assault of him and his brother

Merseyside Police have released CCTV images of a man they want to talk to in connection with the assault of Liverpool goalkeeper Shamal George and his brother.

George, the Reds’ Under-23s glovesman, suffered facial injuries during an attack in Liverpool city centre two months ago.

His brother was also left with similar injuries after the Saturday, March 9 assault.

Police were called to Red Door, a bar on Berry Street, in the early hours of the morning after the alleged assault of a 28-year-old male.

George, according to reports, was then attacked outside the premises.

CCTV images, released by Merseyside Police, picture a man they wish to speak to in connection with the incident.

“Detectives investigating an assault in Liverpool are issuing four CCTV images today (Wednesday 1 May) of a man we wish to speak to,” a statement read. “Two men were assaulted in Red Door, Liverpool, in the early hours of Saturday, 9 March 2019.

“The man we wish to speak to is described as a white man, of stocky build wearing a white t-shirt, with a large tattoo on his right forearm.

“An investigation is ongoing and officers are exploring potential CCTV opportunities.”

George himself shared the tweet on his own Twitter profile urging for help identifying the individual.

He wrote: “This is the man who assaulted me and my brother. If anyone knows anything please let me or the police know. Thank you.”

Liverpool offered their support to the 21-year-old immediately following the attack, while also condemning the individual who put George and his brother through a ‘terrible ordeal’.

“Liverpool Football Club is shocked and appalled that Shamal and a family member have been subjected to such a terrible ordeal,” a statement from the Premier League club read.

â€Å“As a club, we will offer Shamal and his family any support that they require.”

Football: Solskjaer 'confident' of Man United Champions League miracle in Paris

MANCHESTER, United Kingdom (AFP) - Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said his "confident" side could stage a Champions League fightback at Paris Saint-Germain this week after a dramatic 3-2 victory over Southampton on Saturday (March 2).
Romelu Lukaku's 89th-minute strike at Old Trafford, his fourth goal in two games, fired United back into the top four at the expense of Arsenal, who were held by Tottenham.
Solskjaer's side will be aiming to overturn a 2-0 deficit in the Champions League last 16, second leg at PSG on Wednesday.
"The dressing room was bouncing, they were happy, looking forward to Wednesday," said the Norwegian.
"We're playing against one of the best teams in Europe with some absolute quality players but who knows? This has happened before, so many great comebacks.
"The Champions League has given quite a few of those comebacks, PSG against Barcelona for example. We have to do it away from home, but we have eight straight wins away from home.
"We're confident away from home and if we're in the game with 20 or 30 minutes to go, who knows?"

Solskjaer's mentor Alex Ferguson became renowned for his team's last-minute winners during a golden era that featured the current United interim manager, who scored a stoppage-time winner in the 1999 Champions League final against Bayern Munich.
And the Norwegian appeared to have summoned the spirits of the Ferguson era, after United claimed a crucial three points against lowly Southampton.
"It was like the old days," beamed Solskjaer, whose side now lead Arsenal by one point in the race for Champions League qualification, with Chelsea four points further back with two games in hand.
"I've been part of that so many times myself. We spoke about it at half-time and said get the ball in the box and play more forward because the Stretford End will suck it in for you.
"I don't want to take anything away from Andreas (Pereira) and Romelu, because they were great finishes, but that spirit is just part of this club's history. We have done it so many times before."
United appeared to be heading towards a disappointing home draw in the closing moments, when substitute Fred exchanged passes with Luke Shaw and found the in-form Lukaku on the edge of the area.
The Belgian striker did the rest with a pinpoint 18-yard finish into the bottom corner.
Solskjaer could even enjoy the luxury of a missed injury-time penalty when Paul Pogba's effort was well saved by Angus Gunn following Stuart Armstrong's trip on Marcus Rashford.
But the finale, which extended Solskjaer's unbeaten run in domestic action with United to 15 games, was much-needed after it appeared his team would drop points in the chase for a top-four finish.

IRREPRESSIBLE MOOD

In a game of spectacular goals, Saints midfielder James Ward-Prowse struck a superb 25-yard free-kick after 74 minutes to make the score 2-2.
Pereira had equalised for United in the 53rd minute as substitute Diogo Dalot combined with Lukaku, forcing the ball through to the young Brazilian who took a touch before curling a magnificent finish into the Southampton goal.
After a lacklustre first-half display, United were now in an irrepressible mood and took the lead just six minutes later through Lukaku.
Pereira showed his strength to hold off challengers in midfield before slipping through an excellently-timed pass for Lukaku who finished clinically from 15 yards.
It was an impressive turnaround from Solskjaer's team, who had been stunned by an incredible 26th-minute goal by Southampton wing-back Yan Valery.
But there were question marks over David De Gea as Charlie Austin passed wide to the overlapping 20-year-old and his immaculate 30-yard strike beat the United goalkeeper at his near post.
The dramatic conclusion was partly the result of some luck on Solskjaer's part as an injury to the ineffective Alexis Sanchez early in the second half forced him to bring on the far more influential Dalot.

Jamie Carragher rips into Arsenal defender Shkodran Mustafi: ‘He’s been a mess since he joined’

Jamie Carragher has launched a scathing attack on Arsenal defender Shkodran Mustafi after the German’s woeful performance against Crystal Palace on Sunday.

Mustafi was responsible for two of Palace’s three goals, which proved costly as the Gunners’ slipped to a 3-2 defeat and lost ground in their race to finish in the top four.

Mustafi was at fault for Wilfried Zaha’s goal

It’s not the first time the 27-year-old’s defending has come under scrutiny – and Carragher says the horror show was hardly surprising.

“I wasn’t surprised by this,” he told Sky Sports.

“He’s been a mess since he joined the club really and this is another example of it.

“He’s at fault for the second goal as well.

“[Unai] Emery made changes and I can totally understand it. Something has to give in the squad. In terms of the firepower in the team you still expected them to win.

“I think it’s a massive blow for Arsenal’s top-four chances.”

Managers are only allowed a maximum three players from one Premier League team, so this week we’ll be giving our top tips rather than our ins and outs.

So here at talkSPORT.com we’ve picked out the players you should be looking at, featuring some fresh faces as well as trusty old favourites.

In: Bernardo Silva (Manchester City) – £7.8m

Arguably one of the most in-form players in the Premier League, the Portuguese right winger has been making fools of defenders and he could do it again on the final weekend.

He will have a tough opponent in Brighton youngster Bernardo, who has plenty of potential to improve with the Seagulls but Silva should have the upper hand, especially with the Premier League title on the line.

In: Ryan Fraser (Bournemouth) – £6.3m

The Scottish attacking midfielder could well be playing in his last game for the Cherries this weekend.

Fraser will take on Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park knowing he has just one year left on his current contract and could well be sold off with his value high after an excellent season.

Arsenal, reportedly, are keen and the 25-year-old could well put on a show.

In: Lucas Moura (Tottenham Hotspur) – £6.8m

How do you follow his Champions League heroics in midweek? Well, by making sure Spurs are in the competition next year with goals and assists against Everton.

There is a chance he could get a rest, so we do urge caution, but given the club’s injury worries we doubt Lucas will get one. Unless Mauricio Pochettino decides it’s time for Vincent Janssen to shine at their new stadium.

In: Salomon Rondon (Newcastle United) – £5.9m

In the final game of his loan spell at St James’ Park, Rondon is still playing for his future despite winning the club’s Player of the Year award.

If Benitez stays, he could well sign up the Venezuelan star but until then he has just one more match.

Luckily for him it’s against Fulham who, despite some recent wins, have a poor defence and may not be able to handle his physical presence.

In: Nathan Redmond (Southampton) – £5.5m

The Saint is wildly erratic when it comes to form but Ralph Hasenhuttl’s improved side could well be up for it against relegated Huddersfield.

The Terriers had their swan song against Manchester United so we don’t expect them to put up much of a fight and the English attacker could take advantage.

Nathan Redmond skips past a challenge

7

In: Gylfi Sigurdsson (Everton) – £7.4m

You might think the Toffees have nothing to play for but the Icelandic international is looking to do himself proud against former club Tottenham on Sunday.

The midfield was sold off by Spurs and he may have looked at their Champions League heroics with a pang of regret given he played alongside some of their current stars.

Travelling to their new stadium with the chance of giving Arsenal a shock fourth place finish might get him going too. He’s wildcard but one you might need on the final weekend.

Wilfried Zaha: Crystal Palace prepared to let star man leave for whopping £80m this summer

Crystal Palace have slapped an £80million price tag on Wilfried Zaha, according to reports.

The Mail on Sunday claim that the Eagles are prepared to let the wantaway forward leave this summer, but only for the right price.

Crystal Palace are prepared to sell Wilfried Zaha for £80m this summer

Zaha recently revealed he wants to leave Selhurst Park in order to realise his ambition of playing Champions League football.

And the former Manchester United man is likely to get his wish granted this summer, with a host of Europe’s top clubs chasing his signature.

Arsenal have shown a long-standing interest in the 26-year-old, with club representatives watching him on numerous occasions.

Borussia Dortmund and Inter Milan have also expressed an interest in Zaha, while Tottenham are unlikely to afford a deal to sign the tricky playmaker.

The ongoing situation with Zaha is likely to have an impact on team-mate Aaron Wan-Bissaka’s future.

The Palace right back, 21, is regarded as one of the best young talents in the world and is attracting interest from the Premier League’s elite.

There is, however, a huge reluctance at Selhurst Park to let both Zaha and Wan-Bissaka leave in the same summer, with club hierarchy fully aware of the backlash they’d receive from supporters.

Only a huge offer for both Wan-Bissaka and Zaha will tempt the board into selling them both in the same window.

Palace fended off interest for Zaha last summer, with the club persuading him to sign a new five-year deal worth £130,000 a week – thus making him the highest earner at the club.

But in light of Zaha’s recent comments in the media, it seems a matter of when, not if, the attacker departs the Premier League outfit.

Football: Trophy hunter Guardiola happy to miss out on winter getaway

MANCHESTER, United Kingdom (AFP) - Pep Guardiola insisted on Friday (Jan 11) he will be happy if Manchester City have no time for a mid-season break, because it will mean they are still competing for every trophy.
City's rivals Manchester United took the opportunity this week for a warm-weather training trip to Dubai, allowing boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer time to work on his squad's fitness.
Guardiola did take his players to Abu Dhabi last March, after their surprise FA Cup fifth round defeat at Wigan left them with a free week.
The City boss will consider a similar trip this time round if an early FA Cup exit leaves a gap in their match schedule.
But he acknowledges that it may be difficult to fit in such a break if City remain in the hunt for all four major prizes.
"Hopefully not, because that means we continue in the FA Cup and especially in the Champions League. We will see. If not, then we will have this time in summer time," Guardiola told a press conference.
"Last season, it was quite similar. But then after Wigan beat us in the FA Cup, we went there."
City are still in contention for a quadruple of Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup and League Cup titles, something that has never been achieved in the English game.
They took a significant step towards winning one of those trophies on Wednesday, thrashing third tier Burton Albion 9-0 in the first leg of their League Cup semi-final.
It means that, barring something extraordinary in the second leg on January 23, City will feature in the final at Wembley on Feb 24.
That creates another barrier to a potential winter vacation as their league fixture at Everton, scheduled for the previous day, would have to be rearranged.
"Did you see the schedule this morning? I saw the schedule, and the Everton game will be fixed for another week, so we don't have many (spaces in the schedule for a warm-weather break), so we'll see," Guardiola said.

TITLE RACE

City, having taken a step towards a cup final, resume their attempt to catch leaders Liverpool in the Premier League title race on Monday, when they host Wolves.
Guardiola's side, in second place, are four points behind Liverpool after beating them 2-1 at the Etihad Stadium on Jan 3.
It was Liverpool's first league defeat of the season, and may have increased the pressure on a team trying to become champions of England for the first time since 1990.
But Guardiola rejected the suggestion that he is happier chasing than leading.
"I prefer to be in Liverpool's position," he said.
Guardiola hopes to have Sergio Aguero back for the Wolves match, with the striker having missed City's past two matches because of illness, while Vincent Kompany is close to recovering from a muscle problem.
City have found it tough keeping pace with Liverpool, despite collecting 50 points from 21 games, a better average this season than Barcelona, who are top of La Liga.
Barcelona have collected 40 points from 18 games, an average of 2.22 per match, while City's average of 2.38 is currently only good enough for second place.
"The Premier League is incredibly tough," he said. You don't realise how tough it is until you are here for the amount of games, the weather, the time needed for players to recover."
