The Final held at the Olympic Stadium in Munich was expected to be a one-sided affair against a Juve team containing Zinedine Zidane, Christian Vieri and a young Alessandro Del Piero were thought to be too strong for the Germans.

But having beaten Manchester United in the previous round, Ottmar Hitzfeld was confident his side could cause another upset on home turf.

Despite scoring in the first leg at Old Trafford, Ricken was dropped to the bench for the final because of the midfield threat of Zidane and Didier Deschamps.

With Paul Lambert and Paulo Sosa controlling the midfield, the Bundesliga side raced into a two goal lead.

However, Del Piero came off the bench to get one back for the Serie A side to set up a thrilling finale.

With less than 20 minutes remaining, Hitzfeld sent on Ricken to shore up the defence to secure the win. But what happened next has since gone down in Champions League folklore.

Within just 16 seconds of coming onto the pitch, the homegrown hero raced onto a through ball by Andreas Moller and, with his first touch, sent a gorgeous chip sailing over captain Angelo Peruzzi.

To this day, it is the quickest goal by a substitute in a Champions League final and is one of the most iconic moments in the competition’s history.
