Phil Neville has named his dream Manchester United XI for next season – and there’s some big-money signings included.
The former Red Devil, 42, was asked to pick his United dream team on TV show Premier League Today – and he wants four fresh faces at Old Trafford.
Neville, the former United star and current England women’s manager, wants one defender to be signed and unsurprisingly it is Real Madrid and France centre-back Raphael Varane.
The World Cup winner reportedly wants out of the Spanish capital for a fresh challenge – and United would represent exactly that.
Varane has been heavily linked with a move to United in recent years and a pairing with the revitalised Victor Lindelof, alongside full-backs Luke Shaw and Diogo Dalot, could form a solid back line for years to come.
Therefore Neville would rather Chris Smalling was axed from next seaason’s line-up.
Neville wants two new additions alongside Paul Pogba in the United midfield –Â meaning both Nemanja Matic and Ander Herrera would be axed from the XI.
He would back a move for Tottenham Hotspur and England midfielder Eric Dier to take up the holding midfield role.
Dier already has invaluable experience at the highest level for Spurs and at just 25 years old, he could be a mainstay in front of United’s back line for the foreseeable future.
Neville also wants to see Barcelona playmaker Philippe Coutinho make his way to Manchester.
The former Liverpool star has struggled to settle for the Spanish giants, with just four goals and two assists in 26 La Liga appearances this season.
There have been numerous reports linking him with a move back to the Premier League and Coutinho himself has reportedly informed a number of Spanish players in the United squad that he wants to resurrect his career in Manchester.
Finally, Neville wants to see Gareth Bale sign for the Red Devils.
The Welshman’s future at the Bernebeu is looking bleak following the return of Zinedine Zidane as Los Blancos chief.
In Zidane’s first stint in charge at the Bernebeu he often preferred Isco in his starting team – and a move back to the Premier League to get more first team action may be desired for Bale as he reaches the tail end of his career.
Bale would occupy the right-wing position in the front trio, with Marcus Rashford continuing through the middle and Anthony Martial on the left.
Jesse Lingard and Romelu Lukaku would therefore be benched or be sold in Neville’s set-up.
