They have verbally agreed a deal and will pay around £5million for the striker, according to Yahoo in Brazil.

Martinelli is highly thought of and even had a trial with Manchester United in 2017.

It has been suggested that Arsenal are waiting for the teenager to get an Italian passport before making the move official.

This means they would not have to negotiate potential visa and work permit issues.

A number of top clubs in Europe are understood to have been watching Martinelli’s progress.

Palmeiras and Flamengo were also monitoring him but it would appear that the Gunners have won the race.

His agent, Marcos Casseb, also revealed recently that he plans on making the move to Europe soon.

“To be honest we expected this to happen,” Casseb told Globo Esporte when asked about the interest shown in the teenager.

“His evolution since last year is very fast, he is above average. The initial planning is for him to go straight to Europe.”
