Mike Phelan has been appointed Manchester United assistant manager, the Premier League club have confirmed.
Phelan has been working as the club’s number two under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer since the former United striker returned to Old Trafford as interim manager earlier this season.
And he will not stay on past the end of the campaign, signing a three-year deal with the Red Devils.
Phelan had been a leading contender to become Manchester United’s first ever technical director, with Solskjaer understood to be backing him for the role.
However, Sir Alex Ferguson’s former assistant remains in his existing position, with Michael Carrick and Kieran McKenna joining him on Solskjaer’s first-team coaching staff.
