Liverpool 2-0 Chelsea: Tony Cascarino slams Blues for ‘playing with a small-club mentality’ at Anfield

Chelsea ‘played with a small-club mentality’ during Sunday’s visit to Liverpool, which ended in a 2-0 defeat for Maurizio Sarri’s side.

Aside from a 10-minute spell after the Reds scored their second goal – a truly superb strike from Mohamed Salah – in which Chelsea dominated, the Blues were emphatically outplayed by their Anfield opponents.

Liverpool continued their march to the title with a superb defeat of Chelsea

Liverpool continued their march to the title with a superb defeat of Chelsea

Only the brilliant goalkeeping of Kepa prevented Jurgen Klopp’s side taking an earlier lead, and when Sadio Mane netted the opening goal with a close-range header there was no way back for the Blues.

Salah’s strike, which flew past Kepa two minutes later, guaranteed the hosts a valuable three points that returned them to the top of the Premier League table.

Eden Hazard burst to life after Salah scored and missed two glorious chances, hitting the post then being denied by Alisson, but that was the only threat Chelsea posed throughout a lax and lethargic performance.

Sarri’s decision to not field a natural striker – Hazard was selected upfront – revealed much about Chelsea’s approach to the match, and former Stamford Bridge striker Tony Cascarino says the Blues went to Anfield with a ‘small-club mentality’.

In his Times column on Monday, Cascarino writes: “Liverpool’s performance against Chelsea was as impressive as any they have given in the Premier League for a few months.

“They had good intensity – particularly after half-time – and they controlled the game.

“Chelsea were disappointing, playing with a small-club mentality and, but for the odd flash of creativity involving Eden Hazard, they didn’t look like they could even take a point off Liverpool.”

Cascarino also commented on Manchester City’s defeat of Crystal Palace, which sent them top of the table before Liverpool’s victory put them back in first.

He criticised Palace for refusing to attack Pep Guardiola’s side, and compared their approach on Sunday with Huddersfield’s negative style of play against Tottenham on Saturday – and Chelsea’s approach to their clash at Anfield.

“Another win for Manchester City and another team to roll over and offer little threat in attack,” Cascarino continues. “I know Crystal Palace managed to beat City earlier in the season but that made their cautious approach yesterday all the more disappointing.

“Huddersfield were the same in their 4-0 defeat at Tottenham – lots of changes but still a five-man midfield and one shot on target – and in some ways Chelsea were as bad against Liverpool.”

Arsenal’s flopped loan signing Denis Suarez has hit back at his critics on social media.

The Barcelona midfielder has failed to hit the ground running since joining Arsenal on loan in January, making just six substitute appearances.

Denis Suarez is yet to start a game for Arsenal

Gunners boss Unai Emery, who worked with Suarez at Sevilla during the 2014/15 season, has been reluctant to start the 25-year-old over fears he can’t cope with the ‘physical demands of English football’.

And the club are reportedly set to send the Spaniard back to Barcelona at the end of the season, opting not to take up an £18million option to buy him.

Instead, Emery could target Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Christopher Nkunku.

Suarez̢۪s struggling loan spell has led to claims he has failed to impress his manager in training, but he appeared to deny those suggestions in a social media post.

In a video clip uploaded on Twitter, it shows the Spain international scoring a fine goal past Petr Cech in a training session in Dubai.

The caption reads: â€Å“Working hard, learning and improving. PD: dont (sic) talk about my workouts if you have no idea.”

Suarez is behind Lucas Torreira, Matteo Guendouzi and Granit Xhaka in the midfield pecking order.

New Tottenham stadium: The incredible numbers behind Spurs’ ground as they prepare to play Crystal Palace in first Premier League match

After almost two seasons at Wembley, Tottenham Hotspur fans will finally see the club at their new ground.

London rivals Crystal Palace will be the guests on Wednesday as the doors open for the sell-out Premier League clash – the first at the new White Hart Lane.

Tottenham Hotspur will play the first game at their new stadium on Wednesday

Built on the site of the old ground, the aptly named ‘Tottenham Hotspur Stadium’ – nobody will call it that – is magnificent and pays homage to the famous old ground.

Located in the South Atrium is a commemorative plaque where the centre spot at the old ground used to be.

Levy: Our new ground makes Tottenham a big club

The famous cockerel which perched above White Hart Lane has been scaled-up and now sits atop the South Stand at a height of 4.5 metres.

So how impressive is it? Thanks to The Times, fans can see just how much work has gone into what promises to be a marvellous stadium.

NO CASH

1 – The new ground will be the first in the country to not accept cash, with 878 payment points around the stadium.

It is strictly contactless payments only at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium

6

Fans without cash on them can put credit onto their stadium access cards and pay via that method.

With the biggest club shop in Europe, there will certainly be plenty of chances for fans to spend their cash.

STELLAR SCREENS

325m – As well as featuring the Golden cockerel, the South Stand will host the two big screens measuring 325m² – the largest in Western Europe.

As if that was not impressive enough, there will be 17,500 home fans in the single tier stand and it has been influenced by Borussia Dortmund‘s ‘Yellow Wall’ at Signal Iduna Park.

Acoustic experts have designed the stand to help deliver the best possible atmosphere, so be sure to listen to the booming rendition of ‘Oh when the Spurs….’.

MAX CAPACITY

62, 062 – Tottenham can now boast the second largest club ground in the country, behind only Manchester United.

62,062 fans can fit into the new ground

6

62,062 fans can fit into the new ground

While their rivals at Emirates stadium and London Stadium can barely contain more than 60,000, Spurs have gone one step further with their new ground.

With a retractable pitch and a sunken artificial surface, the new ground will also be able to host American football games. When the grass pitch is not required, it can stay in the conveniently located car parking garage for up to 10 days thanks to LED lighting, cooling and irrigation systems.

COSTLY MOVE

£850m – The estimated cost for the new stadium comes in just under the £1billion mark, slightly more expensive than the £789million to build Wembley.

Crystal Palace will be the first team to face Spurs in the new stadium

6

Crystal Palace will be the first team to face Spurs in the new stadium

The initial diagnosis from the Northumberland Development Group estimated the construction of the new stadium would incur costs of around £400 million, but in 2017 it emerged it would actually be nearly double that.

HERE FOR THE BEER

10,000 – That’s how many pints of beer can be poured per minute thanks to new ‘bottoms-up’ technology.

There will also be a microbrewery in the southeast corner, with local brewer Beavertown brewing their own special concoctions in the ‘Tottenham Tap Room’.

The South Atrium will also host the ‘Goal Line Bar’ which runs the entire length of the goal line and is both the longest continuous bar in Europe and the largest bar in the UK at a whopping 65 metres long.

CLOSE TO THE ACTION

7.9 – The maximum distance in meters from the pitch to stand for fans.

Spurs fans will be much closer to the action than their London rivals

6

Spurs fans will be much closer to the action than their London rivals

When West Ham United fans switched from Upton Park to London Stadium, the promise of retractable seating was a huge persuading factor. But some Hammers fans still find themselves 20m away from the pitch.

For some perspective, the furthest distance at the Emirates is 13.8m and 18m at Wembley.

The League One Play-Off final will get underway at 3pm on Sunday, May 26.

In the regular season, Sunderland won 2-1 at home thanks to Lynden Gooch’s 90th-minute strike before it ended in a 1-1 draw at the Valley.

Match stats and facts

  • Charlton have lost just one of their last eight games with Sunderland in all competitions (Won 3, Drawn 4). That defeat came on the opening day of this season’s League One campaign – a 1-2 loss at the Stadium of Light.

  • Charlton are playing at Wembley for the fifth time. Their last appearance at the national stadium was against Sunderland in the 1998 First Division play-off final when they won a dramatic encounter on penalties.

  • Amongst all club sides, only Newcastle United (eight) are currently on a longer winless run in matches played at Wembley than Sunderland, who have drawn two and lost four of their last six such games.

  • Aiden McGeady, who scored a brace for Sunderland at Wembley this season in the EFL Trophy final against Portsmouth, has been directly involved in 20 goals across all competitions in 2018-19 (14 goals, 6 assists), the most of any Black Cats player.
