Chelsea vs Arsenal: The Gunners academy players who could be on the bench for Europa League final in Baku

Arsenal could name several academy stars on the bench for their Europa League final against Chelsea on Wednesday.

New UEFA regulations mean both clubs will be able to name 12 substitutes for the Baku showpiece, as opposed to seven in the earlier stages of the tournament.

The Gunners will be without a host of players through injury, with Aaron Ramsey, Hector Bellerin, Rob Holding, Denis Suarez and Konstantinos Mavropanos all ruled out.

Meanwhile, Armenia international Henrikh Mkhitaryan will not travel due to fears over his safety in Azerbaijan.

Returning loan stars, such as Reece Nelson, are also ineligible.

It means the Gunners are likely to call on their youth squads in order to fill the bench, with several spotted training with the first team this week.

Eddie Nketiah

Eddie Nketiah is already making waves in the Gunners first team

Nketiah has impressively managed to juggle his senior and academy duties this season.

Despite regularly featuring on the Gunners first team bench, he is the Under-23 side’s top scorer with nine goals in just ten Premier League 2 games.

The 19-year-old striker will almost certainly be on the bench in Baku after scoring in Arsenal’s 3-1 defeat of Burnley on the final day of the season.

Joe Willock

Another youngster who is no stranger to the Gunners’ first team is Joe Willock.

The 19-year-old attacking midfielder started against Burnley on the final day of the Premier League season, his 16th senior appearance, and looks another dead cert to feature on the bench against Chelsea on 29 May.

He boasts six league goals and two assists for the Gunners’ Under-23 team this season.

It would be no surprise to see 17-year-old wonderkid Buyako Saka among the substitutes.

The winger appeared once for the Gunners in the Premier League this season, at Fulham, and is widely considered the next big thing at the Emirates.

He has been a staple for Freddie Ljungberg’s Under-23 side, scoring five goals and eight assists in 20 Premier League 2 appearances.

With Mkhitaryan missing, don’t be surprised to see the Englishman on the bench.

Daniel Ballard

Daniel Ballard looks destined for the Arsenal first team one day, but that day could come sooner than expected.

Unai Emery faces a defensive shortage, with Laurent Koscielny and Shkodran Mustafi the only fit senior centre-backs.

That could present an opportunity to 19-year-old defender Ballard, who has been a rock in the heart of the Under-23 side defence this season.
