talkSPORT hosts Alan Brazil and Ally McCoist have unearthed some shocking statistics that show just how bad Manchester United’s rut is under manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
It all started so well for the Old Trafford legend, who suffered just one defeat in his first 17 games in charge as interim boss.
But the wheels have fallen off since he was appointed as permanent manager last month – with United’s latest defeat to Manchester City confirming the club’s worst run of results in over 50 years!
Former Red Devils striker Brazil took a look at the numbers behind the team’s rut, and it does not make for pleasant reading for United fans…
- United have lost seven of their last nine games in all competitions.
- The last time they suffered such a run was back in 1962 – the year Ally was born!
- United are without a clean sheet in 12 consecutive games for first time since 1971.
- It’s been 8 hours and 47 minutes since they last scored from open play.
- United have scored three goals in April – the same as Southampton striker Shane Long.
The Manchester derby is regarded as one of the fiercest rivalries in the Premier League, but City were alarmingly comfortable winners at Old Trafford on Wednesday night.
Even Solskjaer admitted following the game that City are the new kings of Manchester.
And McCoist believes their 2-0 victory shows just how far United are behind their biggest rivals.
LATEST FOOTBALL NEWS
Speaking on Thursday’s Sports Breakfast, the Scotland legend said: “To win the title, you’ve got to say Manchester City and Liverpool are so far ahead of United it’s unbelievable.
“Looking at them just now, they’re a team that will challenge for the champions league places, third, fourth, fifth and sixth, but no more than that.
“You just look at the squads, Manchester City and Liverpool have got better football players and are by far and away better teams.
“Roy Keane said last night they need an entirely new back four, but they’ve already spent fortunes!â€
Former Man United captain Keane was ruthless in his assessment of the current team following the game.
Speaking as a pundit on Sky Sports, the Irishman raged at Paul Pogba, accused Fred of ‘cheating’ and said the United squad is full of ‘bluffers’ who will ‘throw Ole under the bus’.
Who are those ‘bluffers’?
“I think he’s having a wee go at effectively the vast majority of them,†said McCoist.
“There are players not doing their jobs, letting runners go.
“I would guess he’s having a go at the likes of Paul Pogba, Fred, Romelu Lukaku, boys like that, but how many do you want to name?
“Another boy who disappointed me last night when he came on was Anthony Martial. You’re looking for a reaction!
“Alexis Sanchez, I don’t know what’s happened to him, I really don’t.
“He was an excellent player at Arsenal, and I don’t have a problem with him being a loner, but I have a problem with the lad not going out and earning his pay packing and not giving everything for his team. There’s seriously a problem there.
“But in my mind, who is Roy Keane talking about? Probably about 90 per cent of the squad.â€
